The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire. Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September.

   In March this year, the United Nations called on all parties to focus on the battle against this unprecedented global pandemic COVID-19. Solidarity and cooperation across borders, sectors and generations are needed to win this new fight against the worst public health crisis of our time.

   As the United Nations has a theme for the World Peace Day, the September 21, 2020 theme for the International Day of Peace is “Shaping Peace Together”, to celebrate the day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic so that we can shape peace together.

   COERR organized the World Peace Day “Shaping Peace Together” at Ban Mae La and Ban Um Piem Temporary Shelters on 18 and 21 September 2020, respectively. There were 89 participants at Ban Mae La temporary shelter, comprising 69 female and 20 male and 50 participants at Um Piem temporary shelter. The World Peace Day event aimed at encouraging all members of Ban Mae La and Um Piem Temporary Shelters to realize the importance of Peace and Non-violence especially towards children and youth, respect to Life and Dignity of Individuals as well as promote Unity and Harmony. Cerebration activities included: Speeches made by community leader, religious leaders, candle lighting ceremony, songs by choir, reading poem on peace, performance by peace committee, etc.

World Peace Day Celebration at Ban Um Piem Temporary Shelter

   COERR Mae Hong Son organized World Peace Day on September 21, 2020 at Ban Mai Nai Soi Temporary Shelter in Mae Hong Son Province’s Mueang District. The activity on stage comprised of opening speech on background and objectives, kindergarten’s performance, children’s singing, award giving to children aged 5-11 who won drawing and painting competition, quizzing about peace and peace promotion activities in their community by COERR and Peace Committee.

   COERR Mae Sarieng organized the World Peace Day on September 19, 2020 Event in Ban Mae Lama Luang and Ban Mae La Oon Temporary Shelters in Mae Hong Son Province’s Sob Moei Distrct. Several activities were performed as to celebrate the World Peace Day such as Speech, Singing contest, debate competition, etc. There were over a hundred of audience including schoolchildren, youth and seniors participated in the event.

   World Peace Day event was organized and celebrated, by COERR Kanchanaburi, at Ban Tham Hin Temporary Shelter on September 18, 2020, for about 350 displaced participants and Ban Don Yang Temporary Shelter on September 25, 2020, at which about 250 people participated, under the theme “Shaping Peace Together”
